Welcome to Whakatāne Intermediate
We are a school of 556 students where 50% of us are Maori. We live in the heart of the beautiful Eastern Bay of Plenty where we have easy access to fantastic beaches, stunning native bush and of course the most sunshine hours in the country. We look to make the most of our vibrant backyard as often as possible within our educational and co-curricular programmes.
Our learning programmes are of the highest quality from a team of passionate, hardworking and energetic teachers. We have a strong focus on Numeracy and Literacy as we believe that students who develop confidence, interest and value in these areas, set themselves up for success as they move through the different levels of education. Quality pastoral care also begins within our classrooms as the relationship that forms here is the foundation for each student to develop that connection with their school.
The learning continues with access to a highly creative and inspiring technology department. This area of learning provides each student the chance to experience different types of technology that could open up a world of interest and passion for the future.
Our students have countless opportunities for co-curricular and cultural experiences and we are always encouraging our students to try something new and potentially create a whole new experience that can become part of who we are as individuals.
The intermediate years of a student’s education are where they are exposed to different opportunities of learning in completely new contexts. It is here that their eyes are opened to what is possible as they decide where their learning can take them. To attend a school that concentrates solely on the needs of this age group is widely recognised as the best way to not only maintain, but inspire a student’s engagement with education at a very critical stage of life.
I love the saying “lifelong learners” as it means that learning is worthwhile, a lifelong habit and allows us to aim to
achieve dreams. We aim to connect our students with quality learning from the beginning of their time here. It is this enjoyment of learning that we want our students to value as
it allows them to create a pathway for themselves.
We believe in meeting whanau, not only in the classroom, but beyond it as well. Our doors are always
